FREQUENTLY USED TERMS

BRONZE ANODIZE
Treatment of aluminum which protects the metal against pitting and includes a permanent bronze color to the section
CAM LATCH
Locking device used on ventilators at traffic-flow level
CAPPING
Metal formed to cover areas of a window opening not protected by the installation of a new frame.
CASEMENT
Ventilator sections hinged at one of the sides. Handle is at the side opposite the hinge.
CLEAR ANODIZE
Treatment of aluminum which protects the metal against pitting while retaining the natural color
CLERESTORY
Windows contained in the wall of a church rising above the roofs of the flanking aisles.
CUSP
Window area framed by an arc formed by the internal curve of an arch
DOUBLE GLAZE
Two lites of glazing material installed independently.
DOUBLE HUNG
Usually refers to vertically operating window
FIXED
A non-operating or stationary section.
FRAME
A fixed structure fitted and fabricated to enclose or surround the whole
GLAZING BEAD
Section, usually wood or metal, used to hold the glazing material in the frame.
GOTHIC
A pointed arch top.
HEAD OR HEADER
Uppermost horizontal member of the frame. In a Gothic or Roman style, the curved member above the spring line.
MASONRY FIN
Section extending beyond the main structure of the frame. Inserted in a masonry slot or in the air space between walls, usually during construction
PAINTED FINISHES
Electrostatically applied and baked on enamel finishes
SNAP-on glazing bead
Metal glazing bead which mates or locks into frame to secure the glazing materials. No other fasteners such as screws are usually required.
SPRING LATCH
Locking device used on ventilators requiring pole operation.
THERMALLY BROKEN
The aluminum extrusion as separated by a polyurethane barrier which helps reduce condensation and makes the window frame more energy efficient
TRACERY
Intricate glass design or frame work in the upper portion of the window.
TRANSOM
Window area above an entrance.
TRIPLE GLAZING
The combination of insulated glass and leaded glass separated by an air space within a thermally broken frame (3250 and 6000 series.)
VENTILATORS
AWNING
Ventilator which protrudes outward in an open position. Handle is at the bottom
BOTTOM
Projected ventilator with glazing material above the unit.
DOUBLE GLAZE
Unit capable of receiving two independent lites of glazing material (2000 Series)
HOPPER
Ventilator which protrudes inward in an open position
INTERMEDIATE
Projected ventilator with glazing material above and below the unit.
PROJECTED
Ventilator which protrudes wholly in one direction, either to the interior or to the exterior.
SINGLE GLAZE
Unit capable of receiving one lite of glazing material (3000 Series)
TOP
Projected ventilator with glazing material above and below the unit.
VENTILATOR WITH SIDE LITES
Projected ventilator with glazing material to either side of the unit.
WINDOW DIMENSIONS
Dimension of the frame required. Always less than the rough or masonry opening.
